If you’re planning a wedding on the smaller side, the Bates House in Frank Melville Park is a gem worth looking at. Tucked back off Old FIeld Road in East Setauket, the park has everything you need to set the mood for a rustic, romantic day: beautiful old trees, a bamboo forest, a scenic old mill pond, and a few sweet old buildings to set the stage.
One of these buildings is the Bates House, formerly a private residence that is now what we call the best kept secret in wedding venues. It’s not very well known, but don’t let that put you off. A lot of wedding venues in this area book over a year in advance, so the Bates House is perfect a couple of lovebirds who don’t want a long engagement!
The building is made up of a foyer, food service area, large room with a stage, and an outdoor terrace. It can accommodate up to 163 people -- but if you want a dance floor, we personally recommend keeping your numbers below 100!
We think the Bates House is perfect for the couple that wants an intimate day with a bit of DIY. They provide the space, tables, and chairs -- everything else is up to you! You have a lot of room to play around here, from decor to color scheme to picking your favorite caterer.
And of course, there is nothing more perfect than taking a stroll around the park to capture your beautiful wedding photographs. Some of our favorite locations have been along the mill pond in the autumn, in front of the rustic red barn, and of course on the picturesque terrace of the house itself.
